ZXMoto Makes History: First Chinese Manufacturer to Win a WorldSBK Race at Portimao
In a watershed moment for Chinese motorsport, ZXMoto's Valentin Debise stormed to a dominant victory at the Portuguese Round of the 2026 WorldSSP championship, winning Race 1 by an astonishing 3.685 seconds. The French rider then backed it up with a second win on Sunday, completing a historic double at Portimao's Algarve International Circuit.

On March 28, 2026, the international motorcycle racing world witnessed history. At Portugal's Algarve International Circuit in Portimao, French rider Valentin Debise piloted the ZXMOTO 820RR-RS — bearing the number 53 — to a commanding victory in Race 1 of the WorldSSP class, crossing the line 3.685 seconds ahead of the chasing pack. This was the first time a Chinese manufacturer had ever won a WorldSBK race.
In a sport where victory margins are typically measured in tenths of a second, a gap of nearly four seconds verges on the unimaginable. It was a statement of mechanical superiority that left seasoned paddock observers speechless.

Debise started from second on the grid and seized the lead almost immediately. From that point, he controlled the race with metronomic precision, setting his fastest lap at 1:43.634 and stretching the gap with every lap. By the chequered flag, the battle wasn't for first — it was for who would finish second.
Sunday: The Confirmation
If anyone doubted that Saturday's result was a fluke, Sunday erased those doubts completely. In Race 2, Debise found himself dropped to third position early on, with Yamaha and Ducati riders swarming around him. Rather than settle, the Frenchman mounted a clinical counterattack, overtaking both rivals to recapture the lead — and the win — by half a second.
"From the first day, I felt this bike had something special," Debise said after the double victory. "We focused on rhythm and composure after the earlier setbacks in the season. This result is a genuine team effort."
Breaking a Century-Old Monopoly
The significance of this achievement cannot be overstated. For over one hundred years, the podiums of premier motorcycle racing have been the exclusive domain of European and Japanese manufacturers — Ducati, Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki, BMW. The Portimao double victory dismantled that monopoly overnight.
ZXMOTO founder Zhang Xue, watching from China, was overcome with emotion. "I have waited for this moment for twenty years," he said. "From one person and one self-modified motorcycle, to standing on the world's biggest stage — this is not just my dream. It is a victory for everyone who believes Chinese manufacturing can compete globally."
The Machine Behind the Milestone
The 820RR-RS is a track-tuned evolution of ZXMOTO's flagship 820RR. Powered by an in-house developed 819cc inline triple engine producing 153.6 horsepower at a dry weight of just 168 kg, its power-to-weight ratio of 0.91 exceeds that of the Ducati Panigale V2 (0.80) and Yamaha YZF-R9 (0.77).
Equipped with Öhlins DLC suspension, Brembo GP4X calipers, Pirelli V4 racing tyres, and a self-developed six-axis IMU with cornering ABS and traction control, the machine represents the cutting edge of Chinese engineering ambition.

What This Means for Chinese Motorsport
Observers note that in recent years, Chinese motorcycle manufacturers have been shifting from cost-advantage competition to technology-driven development, with growing investments in engine design, lightweight materials, and performance optimisation.
ZXMOTO, founded in Chongqing in April 2024 by Zhang Xue (who previously co-founded KOVE in 2017), achieved a total production value of 750 million yuan (US$104 million) in 2025, with R&D investment reaching nearly 70 million yuan. The company aims to continue strengthening innovation and expanding its global market presence.
"In the next five years, we aim to capture more than 50% of the market share currently held by major international brands," Zhang Xue declared after the victory.
With 50 points from the Portuguese double and two more rounds to come in quick succession, ZXMOTO's WorldSBK campaign was no longer a curiosity — it was a genuine championship threat.
